The Road Warrior
For those of us that work our passion and make our living on the road, it can be a lonely existence. I remember the moment I flirted with depression on a late night flight back from who the hell can remember in February of 2020. Leaning my head against the fuselage window, I knew I had hit the wall. That life-work balance thing was beyond out of kilter. I was on the edge…and slipping. And, like the Bon Jovi song, “Bed of Roses,” I was so far away that every step I took was on my way home.
A few weeks later, as if on queue, the world stopped. And, as horribly painful as the plague was, I regained my life and my balance with my partner, the love of my life.
I recently stumbled upon a post from Davy Knowles that encapsulated the feeling better than I have ever heard. “It’s a weird one, the nomadic life of a musician. You spend your time at home working towards leaving, and then spend your time while you are away working, trying to get back home. It’s a little switch that flicks off and on, off and on, off and on.”
That’s so it. So it.
I had the distinct pleasure to recently hang with another sector consultant…and we agreed that, if one thinks they want into this life (as we see so many today running headlong into it), they need to think hard about the commitment it takes. And the price it exacts. I may have made it look easy. It isn’t.
One might dance with consulting as a part-time dalliance…but if one wants to go all in, be prepared for what that ultimately requires. And, if I can offer advice (or a shoulder), you know where to find me.
