Uh-oh. Park City, Utah is a ski town (population 8,200) that depends heavily on tourism. And, there’s more.

Sundance Film Festival, held annually for 10 days in late January, has been attracting 20,000 in-person visitors while boosting Park City’s coffers and reputation over the past 40 years. However, organizers say the festival has outgrown the town. There are plans to move Sundance starting in 2027. This could leave a $132 million hole in the town’s economy.

Sundance has a significant effect on the Utah economy. A report released by the festival last year reported that out-of-state visitors spent $106.4 million with the total economic impact providing $132 million and 1,730 jobs for Utah residents.

Three locations are being considered, according to The New York Times: Salt Lake City, 45 minutes away, along with a smaller presence in Park City; Boulder, Colo.; and Cincinnati. The final choice is expected to be announced in late March or early April.
