Historically, locals like to keep to themselves and tourists want to know ALL THE HIDDEN GEMS. This is where you as a DMO can shine by engaging both locals and tourists to see that your destination is big enough for both of them. Here are strategies to meet your audience where they are and build strong connections.
  • Leverage Social Media: You’ve heard it a thousand times by now, but let’s face it, Social Media with the right apporach and User Generated Content can create more activations (heads and beds). Trends can change but what I’ve found to be most helpful summer 2024 has been instagram stories: posting pics throughout my day in my destination and facebook groups: engaging directly with locals and tourists asking real-time questions about my destination.

  • Host Community Events: People still want to be included so don’t shy away from a good ole fashioned invite. (even if they ghost you). Organize local events that encourage interaction between residents and visitors, such as cultural festivals, farmers markets, and public performances.

  • Create Accessible Content: The kids are on tiktok, tjhe businesses are on Instagram and Linkedin, and the Boomers are on Facebook. Okay, this is a generalization only based on first-hand experience, but as you learn your audience more, you can they find out where they spend their online time. Ensure your content is available in multiple formats (videos, blogs, infographics) and languages to reach a broader audience.
By engaging both locals and tourists effectively, you can create a sense of community and enhance the overall experience of your destination.
