Every DMO has a story about the board meeting where the quarterly deck landed with a thud. Visitor count up. Awareness up. Campaign impressions up. Silence from the room.

It’s tempting to read that silence as the board not caring about marketing. It’s almost always the opposite. Boards care about outcomes — what happened in the destination because of the money they approved. The problem is that most DMO decks are built around proof-of-effort, not proof-of-impact, and a sophisticated board member can tell the difference within the first three slides.

The real work for a DMO in 2026 isn’t another dashboard. It’s a stakeholder narrative that stands up under adult scrutiny.

The deck is the product

A destination marketing organization is, functionally, a publicly-funded marketing agency that has to re-earn its mandate every year in front of people who are not marketers. Yet the board meeting gets treated like a progress update instead of what it actually is: the single most important campaign the organization runs all year.

Everything else — the paid media, the creator partnerships, the earned media placements, the always-on content engine — supports this one annual campaign. If the board doesn’t renew the mandate, none of the downstream work happens. The Destinations International Destination Reputation Study repeatedly surfaces the same finding: stakeholder confidence, not visitor volume, is the strongest predictor of DMO funding stability.

DMOs that understand this inversion put their best strategic storytelling into the board deck. DMOs that don’t treat it as a reporting chore and then express surprise when the board starts asking about alternative governance structures.

Stop leading with what you spent. Lead with what changed.

The most common error in a DMO quarterly deck is the input-first structure: budget deployed, campaigns run, impressions delivered, followers gained. Each of those is a thing the DMO did. None of them is a thing that changed in the destination because of what the DMO did.

A better structure starts in the opposite order. What changed in the local economy this quarter? Which partner experienced a measurable outcome that is at least partially attributable to DMO work — a hotelier whose group block grew, a restaurant that traced an unusual spike to a campaign weekend, a neighborhood association that saw foot traffic shift? The numbers live inside existing tools — operator reports, Zartico’s destination operating system, Arrivalist’s visitation data, Key Data from partners, credit-card panel data. The work is to surface them in human terms, not in marketing-speak.

A board that hears “hotel occupancy on the northside rose 6% during our spring campaign window, and three operators attribute at least part of that to the campaign” will engage differently than a board that hears “we generated 11 million impressions.”

Name the trade-off, don’t hide it

The second structural mistake DMOs make is trying to make every number look good. Boards know better. A quarterly deck that reports six wins and zero challenges reads as either dishonest or naive, and both erode the authority the DMO needs when the hard budget cycle hits.

Strong DMO narratives name the trade-off. “We shifted 20% of the spring budget away from top-of-funnel awareness and into group and meetings acquisition. The consequence is that aided awareness scores will decline this quarter. The bet is that the group pipeline we’re building now produces economic impact by Q3 that more than offsets the awareness dip. Here is the math behind that bet, and here is the date we will report back on whether the bet paid off.”

That paragraph is more persuasive than fifty slides of positive-framed metrics, because it treats the board like adults who can hold two ideas at once. And it gives the DMO political cover when one number goes sideways.

Build the through-line from spend to story

The practical work, quarter after quarter, is to tighten the through-line between the money the board approved, the things the DMO did, and the outcomes that showed up in the destination. Most DMOs can produce two of those three cleanly. Fewer can connect all three in a way that a board member could explain to a city council member in their own words.

The DMOs that develop this muscle — connecting spend to action to outcome in plain language — are the ones whose budgets don’t get pulled into the first round of cuts when the general fund tightens. Their boards have a story to tell. The boards that are still looking at impression counts don’t.

Another dashboard won’t fix this. A clearer story will.
