Group travel in the United States generated $319 billion in annual economic impact and supports more than three million jobs, according to the 2026 Group Travel Report released by the U.S. Travel Association. For destinations still trying to convince stakeholders that meetings, conventions, sports events, and group tours matter, the report offers the clearest number-based answer the industry has produced in years.

The report segments group travel into four buckets — business events, leisure group tours, sports, and live entertainment — and attaches an economic-impact figure to each. Business events alone recovered to roughly 82% of 2019 levels in 2024 and, according to U.S. Travel’s latest travel forecast, are projected to grow faster than transient travel through 2026 as in-person demand continues to rebound. Sports tourism and live entertainment are flagged as the two fastest-growing segments, both carrying implications for DMO sales teams and civic infrastructure investment.

What this means for DMOs

Three practical takeaways stand out.

First, the group number reframes the funding conversation. Most DMO board decks lead with visitor counts and awareness metrics. Group travel’s share of economic impact gives sales-focused destinations a defensible, sector-wide benchmark to anchor budget requests against — especially as states like Missouri and others weigh cuts to state tourism office budgets.

Second, sports is no longer a niche. With the U.S. co-hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 and the 2028 Olympics on deck, destinations that have historically treated sports tourism as a side function now have to decide whether to build or contract that capability. The report’s framing pushes sports out of the “emerging” column and into core DMO infrastructure.

Third, alignment with the local economy matters more than ever. Group travel delivers measurable, traceable spend — hotel room blocks, F&B minimums, venue contracts — that local leaders can verify. DMOs that can connect group sales activity to specific economic outputs in their jurisdiction will have an easier time defending occupancy-tax allocations and TID renewals than those still arguing from awareness.

The broader context is a U.S. visitor economy under pressure on the international side. Group travel’s durability — particularly the domestic meetings and sports segments — is quietly becoming the ballast of the recovery story. The destinations that move first to operationalize this framing will spend less time explaining their value next fiscal cycle.
