Mammoth Lakes Tourism announced on April 15 that Brian Wright will serve as its next President & CEO, ending a national search that began after the departure of John Urdi, who led the organization for more than 15 years. Wright steps into a role where most of the destination’s recent strategic gains were authored by a single executive, and the board’s selection signals where the destination wants the next decade to go.

According to the official announcement carried by Eastern Sierra Now, Wright brings 25+ years across the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Yosemite National Park, Visit California, and Santa Monica Travel & Tourism. The search was led by an ad hoc board committee that pulled inputs from lodging, dining, and broader tourism operators — meaning the brief was not written behind closed doors.

What the Hiring Committee Actually Optimized For

Reading between the lines of the Sierra Wave coverage and the official press release, four signals stand out for any DMO board running its own succession plan in the next 24 months.

First, the committee weighted destination stewardship as a core leadership skill, not a side initiative. Wright’s background spans national parks and major attractions where managing visitation against community impact is the day-job, not a press release.

Second, air service development was named explicitly as a leadership outcome. For a destination that lives or dies on direct flights, this is no longer a vendor-managed function — it sits with the CEO.

Third, brand and growth strategy was paired with community-focused leadership. Boards are no longer willing to choose between a marketer and a coalition-builder. They want both, and they’re willing to wait until they find it.
