Brand USA opened applications on April 27 for the India cohort of its Global Ambassador Program, the next stop in a worldwide travel-trade recruitment push that aims to onboard 250 international advisor-ambassadors by July 4, 2026. The deadline lines up with America’s 250th anniversary — and the rollout itself is a signal of how the country’s national DMO is choosing to extend its reach into priority inbound markets without opening a single new overseas office.

The program builds on an Australia and New Zealand pilot Brand USA ran in 2025, and the India launch is part of a broader Asia-Pacific expansion. Coverage from Today’s Traveller and TravelBiz Monitor notes that India advisors can apply with either a written or video submission outlining their connection to U.S. travel and the contributions they make to the trade. Selected ambassadors get training, content, and direct access to Brand USA partners in exchange for becoming credible local voices for their assigned region of the United States.

India is a priority market for a reason. It is one of nine destinations that Brand USA targeted in its “America the Beautiful” global campaign, alongside Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. With more than 300 weekly direct flights between India and the U.S., the air capacity is in place — what was missing was on-the-ground advocacy from advisors who actually book the trips.

What this means for DMOs

The lesson for U.S. destinations is not that Brand USA is recruiting in India. It is the model itself. As Canadian visitation to the United States dropped 21% in 2025 and inbound spending fell by more than $14 billion, every state and city DMO chasing international visitors is being forced to choose between two expensive options: keep paying for global trade missions, or stand up overseas representation. A trained, vetted ambassador network does the same job for a fraction of the cost.

The DMOs that will benefit most from Brand USA’s 250-ambassador buildout are the ones that proactively connect with those ambassadors as they get assigned to U.S. regions. The Class of 2026 will be trained on Route 66, the World Cup, and the country’s 250th anniversary — but the ambassadors themselves will pick what destinations to champion based on which DMOs show up to support them. Make it easy: send a content kit, offer a familiarization itinerary, and treat them like a long-term sales channel rather than a one-off campaign asset.

The bigger strategic point is that international demand generation is increasingly a network problem, not a media problem. Brand USA is not going to outspend the global tourism market. It is trying to outsource influence to credible local voices in markets where U.S. tourism brands have no organic presence. Smart state and city DMOs should be modeling something similar in their own priority feeder markets — whether that is meeting planners in Mexico, advisors in the U.K., or trade partners in Japan. The dollars spent recruiting 25 high-trust local champions almost always go further than the same dollars spent on a single international media buy.
