Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau announced a new accessibility landing page and grant-funded efforts aimed at improving accessibility infrastructure for visitors and residents. Through a strategic partnership with Wheel the World, more than 60 accessibility assessments have been performed for local tourism-related businesses and attractions in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
“This accessibility information is not only available to visitors looking for things to do, but also our residents. With our recently passed strategic plan, we will continue building out these accessible experiences allowing us to foster a welcoming community for all visitors.” — Courtney Cacatian, Executive Director of the CACVB
Additionally, the CACVB secured a $20,000 DRIVE Outdoor Grant through the Virginia Tourism Corporation. These funds, as determined by stakeholders from City and County Parks and Recreation departments, the Shenandoah National Park, outdoor recreation outfitters, and environmental groups, were provided to the Rivanna River Company to purchase three special adaptive kayaks, set to launch in spring 2025. The RRC has also created four accessible parking spots and improved the accessibility of their entrance area and path to their accessible portable toilet.
