Amsterdam continues to test new ways to combat overtourism. The most densely populated country in Europe is approximately the size of Connecticut and Massachusetts combined. There were around 22 million overnight stays in 2023, pushing the limits for residents and visitors.
In the central district, measures being taken to deal with the strain while getting tourism under control include:
- Putting a ban on all new hotel construction in city center
- Cutting the number of river cruises in half by 2030
- Allowing fewer short term holiday rentals
- Banning large tourist buses in city center
- Enforcing one of Europe’s highest taxes on overnight stays
- Mandating Red Light District bars and restaurants earlier closing time
- Creating “I Live Here,” a campaign to foster respect in Red Light District by highlighting the residents
- Building new affordable housing for residents outside the city center
