The city of Sedona has decided not to renew its contract with the Sedona Chamber of Commerce for the management of the Uptown Visitor Center, potentially leading to the center’s closure in 2024. This move is part of the city’s broader efforts to restructure its communications department and take over tourism marketing responsibilities from the chamber. The city is looking to increase destination marketing funds by an additional $200,000 in the upcoming budget year, bringing the total annual marketing budget to $350,000.

City officials have emphasized the changing preferences of visitors who rely less on traditional visitor centers and more on electronic devices for information. Some council members have suggested alternative approaches like installing informational kiosks at various locations to cater to modern visitor needs. The future funding of the visitor center remains uncertain, with differing opinions among council members regarding the level of financial support the city should provide, with some proposing 50% funding and others considering no additional funding beyond the chamber’s contribution. A visitor survey is currently underway to gauge the center’s usage, with results expected in January.
